Teaching Moment

Teachers groups in Texas don’t all get along — so, it will be interesting to see where the chips fall as the governor’s race moves into the home stretch.

The Texas State Teachers Association is the first to draw a line in the sand by officially endorsing Democrat Bill White for governor.

“TSTA believes Bill White will usher in a new age of bipartisan educational reform in the State of Texas,” says TSTA president Rita Haecker, “and we greatly welcome the opportunity to effect that change alongside our next Governor.”

The other teachers groups— Texas Classroom Teachers Association, Association of Texas Professional Educators, and Texas AFT (American Federation of Teachers) — have yet to endorse.

White spokeswoman Katy Bacon says the campaign is happy with the endorsement because “teachers are educating the next generation and that’s a fundamental part of Bill White’s campaign.”
